Don’t let a criminal record prevent travel to Canada; even a minor criminal offence committed years ago can prohibit entry. Contact Canada Border Crossing Services toll-free US 1-800-438-7020 or in Canada at (204) 488-6350. Email: bordercrossing@mts.net.
Presently, Canada gives its Immigration Officers discretion as to whom they admit and under what circumstance. Anyone with a DUI may be refused entry; however, the individual may apply for a Minister's Permit for a fee of $200.00 (CND) or a Permanent Certificate of Rehabilitation for $1000.00 (CND). As of June 28th, 2002 those with offences of more than 10 years old may be admitted without paying the $200 fee under a new "deemed rehabilitation" clause. Those with criminal offences less than 10 years old may still be refused entry and be required to pay the processing fee. In Canada, DUI is governed under the Criminal Code while in the US it is more likely to be considered a less serious offence. Please call (306) 927 2335 for more information or to obtain a brochure entitled "Criminal Entry in Canada". If you have had any form of a criminal record, as minor as it may seem to you, confirm entry into Canada prior to departing.
